We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Many early morning runners, shift workers going to or coming home from work, and children catching the rural school district busses are very familiar with this pre-sunrise condition. While the saying may indeed be true, it doesn’t have to be so at your home.

With your outdoor lighting system, it’s all in the controls.

Before my shoulder surgery, I was one of those pre-dawn runners. Living in the hill country of central Texas without many residential street lights meant that 5:00am may as well have been midnight as far as the amount of light was concerned. Being able to get off my own property without tumbling over the trash can or an abandoned bicycle was always a good omen. And then I added a new control setting to my outdoor lighting. Voila! At 5:00am every morning, my landscape lighting comes on to ensure safe passage out of the house and down the road. Even the newspaper delivery guy loves it!

Sometimes we forget the real safety feature that landscape lighting can offer at our homes during the darkest parts of our nights and the wee hours. The many advances made in control systems mean that pre-set on/off times can accommodate your schedule during any of those hours simply, and safely.

If you are working the graveyard shift, heading to the airport for that 6:00am flight, or getting the kiddos ready to catch the bus before daylight, your landscape lighting can be set to keep you secure by lighting the way. And if that security also creates a beautiful environment for relaxing and entertaining, all the better!
