Sometimes in order to get the right effect and complete a great outdoor lighting design, we have to do a little extra “special” work.  Most outdoor lighting companies would probably just ignore an area where they might need to break out the big boy tools — but not us.

Here you can see where we core drilled at the front door of the home and the fireplace hearth at the end of their pool in the back yard.

We recently completed a very large estate-size project in Georgetown, Texas where the home owner really loves outdoor lighting.  He told us from the beginning that he was hiring NightScenes because of our reputation, and to do what we do best. Being allowed to create the best possible design with no limitations is our favorite way to do our very best artistic work.

The project was enormous and the client easy to work with. They loved our ideas and their enthusiasm for the design really fed my creative spirit. But there was one serious problem that we were going to encounter in order for this project to come out exactly the way we envisioned.  My design required that the front entry be up lit to graze the dramatic columns and beautiful archway over the door.  But the front door entry area was already built with a wide landing and steps — and they were even tiled over.

We could have done what most companies would have done and simply skipped it, just avoid lighting that part of the home.  The heartbreak with that is, the entry to any home is the most crucial part of the lighting design in the front.  This is the part of the home where truly great lighting does the magical work of visually guiding residents and visitors to the door, welcoming them into the heart of the property. So it needs a lot of thought, and a little more punch, and should never be left in the dark.

So, how could we overcome this potentially design-busting obstacle??

We rented a stand-up core drilling machine to inset the fixtures right into the landing at the front door so we could install the design as planned, grazing the columns and archway of the entry.  Of course, we also had to get the wire out – which was another fun issue, but we got it taken care of, and the homeowner is beyond delighted.  We also wanted to add a romantic atmosphere around the fireplace at the end of their pool using some soft lighting, so guess what we did again?

We like to say that when it comes to making our clients happy with our outdoor lighting designs, we do what has to be done to get the train to the station.  All aboard!
