Every home has exterior lighting fixtures built into the facade design: a porch light, an outdoor entry chandelier, garage sconces, a lighted patio fan. Whether they are simple in design or elaborate works of art, they were placed on the home to be functional. Although they may not be thought of as “landscape lighting” these light fixtures are a part of your outdoor lighting, and therefore, we must consider how they work and blend into the overall outdoor lighting design.
Do they add to the ambience of your home’s exterior the way you would like? How old are these fixtures? Very likely, they are as old as our home – 5, 10, 20 years old. What style are they? Do they have a lot of glare? Do you even like the way they look? These are a just a few things that we think about when we look at your lighting design.
For a lot of our systems, we like to control the home’s exterior lights along with the landscape lighting to create a nice cohesive lighting scheme across the home and property. This usually includes dimming some or all of those light fixtures so everything blends well together.
Sometimes we make some suggestions which include changing the light bulbs, or even changing the fixtures completely. Since we have access to just about every outdoor lighting manufacturer in the country, we have a very large selection of fixtures to choose from to insure that we find a fixture that you love, that matches the décor of the home and also produces beautiful light without glare.
The outdoor lighting designer has to take everything into account in order to create a spectacular outdoor living space; and the exterior lights of the home are a very important element of that outdoor lighting design. When we make these suggestions, many clients say something like, “I never thought of that, but I really don’t even like these things.” It gives all of us the opportunity to update or replace fixtures with something the homeowner will be happier with.
When you start to think about the possibility of adding outdoor lighting for your home, don’t forget the fixtures that are already built on your home — we won’t.
